Matisse: Drawing with Scissors

"Drawing with Scissors" is one of my most popular in-school field trips. Inspired by the cut-out technique used by Henri Matisse, I guide students through the process of mixing their own colours using liquid tempera paints. We dive into lines and shapes, experiment with composition, and create our very own vibrant, Matisse-inspired cut outs. This program aligns directly with the Alberta Program of Studies, specifically the visual arts curriculum, supporting 21st century learning skills. Through "Drawing with Scissors," students develop their creativity by exploring new art-making techniques and materials. They learn how to communicate their ideas and emotions through their art by investigating colour, line, shape, and composition. Furthermore, your students develop critical thinking skills not only analyzing and evaluating their own artwork, but also the artwork and approach of their peers! In addition to the direct connections to the visual arts curriculum, "Drawing with Scissors" also supports cross-curricular connections with language arts and social studies. For example, students can use their artwork to explore social issues, cultural identity, or environmental sustainability. Following the program, you can build off of what we do together and encourage your students to write artist statements or poetry to accompany their cut outs, enhancing their language arts skills. I understand the challenges of incorporating arts programming into the classroom, and aim to make it as easy as possible for teachers to get approval from their administrators. As an approved vendor with Edmonton Public Schools, I do all the prep, and ensure all supplies and materials are included in the program cost. I guide students through the entire process, making sure that every student has the opportunity to succeed and learn, and do my best to help you tick off as many check boxes as you can from your program of studies.
